My name is
Tony Eldridge. I'm the author of the action/adventure book, The
Samson Effect,
that
Clive
Cussler calls a "first rate thriller brimming with intrigue
and adventure."
When
I
published
my book, it was up to me to make sure people knew it
existed. Fortunately for me, I worked as the marketing director for an
Internet based training company. My job was to go out and find low
cost/no cost ways to market our products. I did that rather well.
I
knew
that
I did not want to spend an arm and a leg, or my life savings,
trying to market my book. I also knew that it could be very easy to
spend money on "marketing" activities that achieved little success.
After studying the market, I came to the conclusion that I could spend
far less doing my own marketing campaign while achieving the
results I was looking for.
With
new
twin
boys and a change in career, I decided that I would approach
marketing my book on a shoestring budget. That meant I needed to get
the best bang for the limited bucks that I was setting aside for
marketing purposes.
I
read
experts
discuss the importance of spending money on this and that.
Everyone, it seemed would be ready to help me get my book in front of
as many eyes as possible for a fee. The truth is, I met a few marketing
experts who I believe are worth their weight in gold.
Still,
I
didn't
have the gold to spend. I had to stay within the shoestring
budget I set. Was I successful? Depends what you define as success.
Having self published my novel, I achieved these milestones:
- I sold more in the first month
than
the average self published author sells in a lifetime
- I
was able to get the novel's visibility out there to the point that I
attracted the attention of a major Hollywood producer who acquired the
rights to the book
- I garnered a review in a major US
newspaper, no small feat for a self published novel
- I found ways to get other newspapers to
write about me and my book
- I have been named author of the month by
many organizations and was named a recipient of a 2008 Meg Award, in the company of
these authors: James Rollins, Jeremy Robinson, David Lynn Golemon, and
Thomas Greanias
I
never
did
reach the New York Times Best Sellers list, but I am not
arguing with what I have achieved so far. Besides, some of the biggest
names in fiction didn't hit it big until their second, third or fourth
book.
Through
this
journey,
I have had the privilege of working with many authors who
have no idea where to start when it comes to marketing their book. Many
had no idea that marketing was part of their job as an author. These
creative, entertaining authors froze when thinking of the overwhelming
information about book marketing that they were being bombarded with.
Many
of
these
authors where just like you and me. They had no Big Publishing
House marketing budget for their books. Even if they were published by
a big New York house, they received very little, if any money for
marketing.
After
a few speaking engagements and workshops sharing my marketing on a
shoestring budget information, I started a blog, entitled Marketing
Tips
For Authors.
Shortly
after that, I started a newsletter where subscribers could receive free
weekly videos marketing tips for authors.
That
brings
us
up to this point in time. The birth of
MarketingTipsForAuthors.com is a direct result of the activities that
led me down this path.
Look
around.
Click
the links. It's my hope that you, as a published, or
soon-to-be published author will find a wealth of information to help
you get the word about your book out to many, many potential readers,
even if you are on a shoestring budget.
